HYDRADERMABRASION:
AN INNOVATIVE MODALITY FOR NON-ABLATIVE FACIAL REJUVENATION
Bruce
M. Freedman, MD, FACS
Background: Hydradermabrasion
is a relatively new procedure that combines crystal free microdermabrasion,
immediately followed by the pneumatic application of a rejuvenating
serum. This study analyzed the histologic and clinical changes
associated with hydradermabrasion.
Method: Twenty
female volunteers, ages 34-52, with skin phototypes I-IV underwent
a series of 6 facial hydradermabrasion treatments spaced 7-10
days apart. The applied serum contained antioxidants including
Vitamin E, camellia sinensis and horse chestnut extract. Skin
biopsies, photographs and skin antioxidant levels, determined
by Raman Spectroscopy, were obtained prior to and after the study.
Results: Compared
to controls, the treated skin demonstrated significantly increased
epidermal and papillary dermal thickness (P<.05); hyalinization
of the papillary dermis with newly deposited collagen fibers;
and lessening of solar elastosis. After hydradermabrasion, skin
antioxidant levels increased 30% (P<.05). These changes were
supported clinically with reductions in pore size, dyspigmentation
and fine rhytides. Patients also noted improved skin texture and
tone. There were no reported complications.
Conclusion: Hydradermabrasion
effectively and safely improves skin quality by increasing its
thickness, repairing the dermal matrix and delivering beneficial
antioxidants. This procedure is beneficial for those desiring
non-ablative facial rejuvenation.
