IPL Intense Pulsed Light
Back

Intense pulsed light devices have been used for the treatment of redness, reduction of freckles, and softening of facial lines and creases. The technology utilizes multiple wavelengths of light to stimulate the skin and eradicate some unsightly lesions. It has become a favorite non-ablative modality due to its predictability and safety. A series of 3-4 treatments spaced at 3-4 week intervals are usually necessary to treat the skin conditions. The treatments are performed in the office without the need for anesthesia and can be combined with microdermabration or light chemical peels. Most patients leave the office with little redness and can return to their normal activities immediately. In addition to treating facial rejuvenation intense pulse light has been successfully employed for improving the appearance of aging hands and the sundamaged chest.

The effects of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment on sun damaged skin can be augmented and expedited with the topical application of a medication called Levulan. Levulan is a photosensitizing agent that has been used extensively for the treatment of a variety of different skin conditions, and is FDA approved for the treatment of sun damaged skin. It is a natural substance found throughout the body, and is a precursor for hemoglobin synthesis. When combining Levulan with regular IPL treatments, the absorption of light in the skin is enhanced resulting in an epidermal peel. This procedure, coined the “activated photofacial” has the unique ability to improved moderate acne, sun damaged skin, blotchy pigmentation, fine lines, minimize pores, reduce oil secretion and remove pre-cancerous skin lesions.

The face, neck, chest and hands are usually treated 2-3 times spaced 3-4 weeks apart. Levulan application may cause the skin to appear pink to red for 24-48 hours after the procedure. Normal activities may be resumed with the exception of excess sun exposure. Therefore, sun block should be applied in addition to physician recommended moisturizers and antioxidants.
