Otoplasty, Ear Reconstructive
Surgery
Back
Otoplasty
is a surgical process that places prominent ears closer to the head
and can reduce the size of large ears. Each individual seeking otoplasty
is unique both in terms of the appearance of their ears and expectations
for results following surgery. Otoplasty is commonly performed on
children between the ages of 9 and 14, but may be done on adults
as well.
Process: Otoplasty
may be done as an outpatient at the hospital or in our operating
room suite. An incision in the back of the prominent ear is made
to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted and
bent back toward the head. In some cases, cartilage is removed to
provide a more natural-looking fold. Permanent stitches are placed
to help maintain the new shape and ear contour. There will be a
scar behind the ear which can often be hidden by many hairstyles.
Recovery: Following
surgery, a bandage that covers the head is worn to promote healing
and molding of the ear cartilage. Within a few days, the bandages
are replaced with a lighter dressing similar to a headband. In approximately
1 week, stitches are removed or dissolved. Discomfort will be present
for several days and most patients may return to work or school
in 5-7 days. Activities or sports that bend the ears should be avoided
for about 4 weeks.
Results: Most
patients are pleased with the results from ear surgery. If performed
at an appropriate time, children can avoid being teased about their
appearance. While every effort will be made to match and balance
the ear appearance, keep in mind that perfect symmetry may not be
attained.
